Keeping Pilots Safe.
Safeguarding the future of GA.
The AOPA Foundation’s Hat in the Ring Society is our longest-running philanthropic giving circle. The name comes from the superior World War I fighter squadron led by the legendary ace Captain Eddie Rickenbacker. The Hat in the Ring Society is comprised of philanthropist-pilots who “throw their hats in the ring” with charitable donations between $1,000 and $5,000 every year.
In that same “first to fight” spirit, our Hat in the Ring Society members take enormous pride in our leadership in shaping and strengthening our freedom to fly. These pilots have come together under the Hat in the Ring banner because they believe that general aviation is a cause worth fighting for – and a national treasure that those who love aviation must protect.
Those who join this society have committed to take a proactive role in supporting initiatives that preserve community airports, grow our pilot population and provide top-notch safety education to pilots everywhere.
Actors and pilots Harrison Ford, Morgan Freeman, Chris Meloni, and Dave Coulier serve as the Society’s honorary chairmen. Other co-chairman include aviation author Stuart Woods, aerobatic champ Mike Goulian, country music star Dierks Bentley, baseball legend Ken Griffey Jr., and other notable pilots who share a love of aviation. They’ve come together because they believe that preserving our freedom to fly is a cause worth fighting for.
Hat in the Ring Society members enjoy many special benefits, and are invited to events, meetings and receptions at gatherings such as Sun n’ Fun, Airventure and other occasions where like-minded pilots meet. By participating in the Society, members make a significant and lasting difference in the future of general aviation.
