Giving Back Grant Requirements

The 2015 grant application process will open May 1st, 2015.

Before applying for grant funds from the AOPA Foundation, please read through the eligibility requirements below and the Frequently Asked Questions (link to the FAQs) . If you have any questions, you can send them to or you can call 301-695-2037.

Please note the following eligibility requirements:

  •   Applying organizations must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
  •   Applying organizations must have a current 990.
  •   The applicant must be an organization doing good work through general aviation.
  •   The Foundation cannot fund:



Scholarships for flight training


Aviation Academies

Governmental Units

Organizations located outside of the U.S.

Scholarships for classes/training/college courses

Airport Commissions

The following documents must be submitted with the grant application:

  •   A copy of most recent IRS 501(c)(3) determination letter
  •   A copy of most recent IRS Form 990
  •   A year-to-date Balance Sheet
  •   A list of the current members of Board of Directors

Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Late applications will not be accepted.


Frequently Asked Questions

When can my organization apply for funds from the AOPA Foundation’s Giving Back Program? The application will be available on May 1, 2015 and can be downloaded from the AOPA Foundation website (

How do I know if my agency/organization is eligible for grant funds through the Giving Back Program? Grants will be awarded to nonprofit organizations doing good work through general aviation that reflect the mission and efforts of the AOPA Foundation. If you have questions about your organization’s eligibility, please call 301-695-2037 or send an email to

Can an individual apply for grant funds? No. Only 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations may apply for funding.

Can the application be for an annual event? Can the funds be used to underwrite an event? Can the funds be used as sponsorship money? No, the Giving Back program is not intended to provide sponsorship or event support.

Can the funds be used for flight training? No, the funds are not intended to cover flight training expenses for an individual.

My organization awards scholarships. Can we use the funds for scholarships? No, the grant funds are not intended to be used for scholarships or to be used to benefit an individual.

Can I apply if my organization has applied for nonprofit status but hasn’t yet received our exemption letter from the IRS? No, the AOPA Foundation cannot accept applications from organizations that have applications “in process”.

My organization can accept tax-deductible contributions but we do not have 501(c)(3) status. Are we eligible to apply? No.

Does the application have to be for a specific program or project? Funding requests can be for specific programs or projects or they can be for operating costs. Funding provided by the AOPA Foundation will be for one year only and there will be no commitment to further funding.

What are the goals and mission of the AOPA Foundation? The AOPA Foundation’s mission is: “The AOPA Foundation, the charitable arm of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, works to improve aviation safety, preserve community airports, and encourage learning to fly for career and personal benefit – all in the interest of ensuring the future of general aviation in the United States.”

The AOPA Foundation works to keep general aviation strong and preserve our freedom to fly by focusing our efforts in the following areas:

How many grants will be awarded? The AOPA Foundation will award 10 grants of up to $10,000 each to aviation-related nonprofits. Grant requests are limited to no more $10,000.

When will the AOPA Foundation announce the winners? Grant recipients will be notified in September 2015.

If my organization receives funds thru the Giving Back Program are there any additional requirements? Yes, all grant recipients are required to submit a progress report at the end of the grant year and all grant recipients are required to communicate about their AOPA Foundation grant award in their news releases, newsletters, annual reports and on their Web sites. AOPA will also utilize its wide-reaching communication network to publicize the good work these aviation nonprofits are doing.
