Pilot Population

Growing and nurturing the pilot population

Growing and nurturing the pilot population is critical to AOPA’s mission to preserve the freedom to fly. Unfortunately, AOPA has discovered that the student pilot drop-out rate is around 80 percent and data has shown thousands of inactive flyers. Our industry is ready for positive change and AOPA is committed to implementing solutions that will maintain an active and growing base of pilots.

The challenge we face is multi-faceted across all areas of the pilot life cycle:

  • Attracting new people into flying
  • Fostering a welcoming and positive general aviation community
  • Keeping pilots active and engaged
  • Re-engaging pilots who have stopped flying

This is an industry-wide effort that cannot be undertaken by AOPA alone. It requires the participation of all industry stakeholders, pilots, and aviation enthusiasts. The AOPA Foundation is committed to carrying out this important initiative and is launching several critical programs including:

  • Collaborating with flight training professionals to showcase best practices in flight training
  • Helping consumers make informed choices about flight training that includes direct student customer feedback
  • Supporting flying clubs and those interested in starting one to expand a cost-effective and social way to fly
  • Fostering a supportive environment for re-engaging inactive pilots

The programs outlined above will be instrumental in reversing the course of pilot decline and setting us on a new course for a stronger GA tomorrow and well into the future. The involvement of all industry stakeholders is a major key to turning the decline around, but most critical to preserving GA as we know it is the passionate involvement of pilots like you.
